Let me tell you a little bit about myself . . .
I was born in Brooklyn, New York the summer of 1965. My family moved to Levittown (on Long Island) when I was about a year old where I proceeded to live my life in suburbia. My early memories of me as a photographer are chasing the girl next door (her name was Carol, we were about 7 years old) to try and get her picture, but she wasn't too keen on the idea. I wasn't showing much promise back then though I was driven to get the photo.
My desire to be a more serious photographer began back around 1980 when my Boy Scout Troop (Troop 323) was preparing to go on a trip to Washington D.C. I wanted to take good pictures, and I didn't want to use my Mom's Kodak Brownie Hawkeye. So, with a little help from my parents, I bought my first 35mm camera, a Pentax K-1000 and 50mm lens (I think that was everyone's first 35mm camera back then). I still have the first picture I ever took with it; an Army tank at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. I didn't have a single picture come out "bad" on that trip. They were all properly exposed with a decent eye for compostion. I know I can't say that I haven't taken any "bad pictures" since.
I was really enjoying taking pictures so I took a photography class my senior year of High School (Island Trees class of 83'...Go Bulldogs). That's where I was introduced to black and white photography (thank you Mr. Adler). I love black and white, because that's my take on life. I'm rather cut and dry, there's not much middle ground.
I joined the Navy the summer of 1983 to be a photographer. I finally began to see the rest of the world (I had seen most of the U.S. and Canada growing up) and also got ahold of my first roll of Kodak Black and White Infrared film. I was hooked from the moment I made the first print
(ivy covered gate).
I used to shoot primarily with a Nikon F3 which I had for about 15 years . Some images were shot with a YashicaMat 124G (6x6) twin lens that I had for a while. Now I shoot with a Canon 20D digital SLR.
I retired from the Navy after 22 years in August 2005 and have since completed my degree in Technology Education which I had been working on during my last 2 years in the service. I tried my hand at teaching High Schooler's and found that it just wasn't in me to do. So I'm back working for the Navy again. This time as a civilian, but once again as a Photographer.
